Please try again later. Verified Purchase. A complete disgrace to the Autodesk name. Got into the first real exercise and was continually frustrated by the output produced by the steps in the book not matching what was pictured. Opened the project files from the website to find that the coordinates of the two planes you're supposed to produce were swapped in the book.
Completely inexcusable, and the publisher has never issued any errata to correct this glaring issue that occurs only 22 pages into the book. Considering it's been 3 years and I'm not the only one that's had this issue, the lack of an errata statement from Sybex is disgraceful. I can't trust this as a reference tool, so I'm sending it back. If you're looking for a perfect example of how low the standards are to become an Autodesk Certified Instructor, this book is for you.
When reading over the contents of this book, I was excited and motivated to learn 3ds. Starting in the 2nd chapter of of this book as a beginner I was having issues with the xyz coordinates. I was told to type in specific numbers in each and every time I did my y and z coordinates would be off. No matter what I did I could not line my "images" up like the book shows, by just using the keyboard inputs.
A page later I had issues with the polygon modeling. The book shows an entire face selected to lengthen a cylinder. My cylinder was full of so many polygons I couldn't select the whole face. I'm a beginner and perhaps these issues are trivial to resolve but after several hours of redoing the first couple pages over and over I've decided to leave this book behind for the time being. I feel like I was learning more from searching issues on the internet than I was from following the book examples.
One person found this helpful. Good beginner's guide to 3D Studio Max I wish it came with a disc of project files though. I prefer that, over downloading from a website. A lot of books will just walk you through a tutorial and tell you the settings to use, but this book explains how and why to use the settings. This has been very helpful in my learning of 3ds max!
Many features are explained and topics not covered are noted that they aren't covered so at least you can search for them elsewhere. I came from blender to learn 3ds max and struggled with some of the differences but this book has really helped to clarify everything. It's become my go-to resource for every question I have and it's very easy to read. I too was a little disappointed that the referenced zip files are archives that require a free download of yet another program, but I've been creating the files myself so I haven't downloaded anything.
Overall, not perfect but I am very happy with how easy this book has made learning 3ds max Many other advanced features are there to accompany your 3D designs and animations with a wide range of effects.
